Description

The Roan antelope are grazers, preferring a lightly wooded habitat. They dislike dense woods and bush. They are also found near a supply of water and generally live in herds of up to 20 head. According to seasons, these herds will wonder in search of food and water.

The Roan antelope is fairly large, with only the Eland being bigger. They have a grayish or reddish-brown body and characteristic white and black markings on their faces. Their long, pointed ears can be swivelled in almost any direction to locate the sounds a threat or danger. Both males and females have fairly long horns which curve gently backwards and are rippled or ringed for most of their length.

Breeding takes place throughout the year and after a gestation period of 9 months a single calf is born.
