Description - Other Names - Distribution - Taxonomy
The Red Duiker is also known as the Natal red duiker. This small, shy antelope is similar to the common duiker, except that it is smaller and redder in colour. Both sexes have short straight horns, parallel to the face. Its ears are rounded and have a black margin. The red duiker has a white tipped tail, similar to the blue duiker.
The red duiker lives among the thick, dense bush and forests in rocky areas along the east coast of southern Africa. The duiker lives close to water as it drinks regularly.
Shy and secretive, the red duiker will take flight as soon as it senses any danger, using the dense bush as cover. Being nocturnal, the duiker is seldom seen during the day - except when the weather is overcast and colder.
The red duiker is found alone or in temporary groups of two or more, eating leaves and shoots and foraging wild fruit dropped by monkeys in the forest.
